Functional electrical stimulation is able to elicit muscle contraction and movement, which is useful for those patients with paralysis to retrain functionality. In this review Marquez-Chin and Popovic considers the theoretical and practical fundations of functional electrical stimulation. I'm personally very passionate about the topic, so that I have read hundreds of articles, and this is the most useful I have found so far.
