Why this course

The objective of this event is to improve your theoretical knowledge and practical skills on upper limb neurorehabilitation.

Language

The course is taught in english; written course material is provided in english.

Content

The course provides both theoretical and practical sessions, with an overall distribution of 30% theory and 70% practice. Short theoretical sessions are given to introduce subsequent practical workshops; in addition, a comprehensive theoretical framework is organized towards the end of the course, to reconnect in one organic methodology what has been learned previously. The decision to prioritise practice before theory is to satisfy the necessity for learning practical therapeutic solutions, and then discover how these skills may be framed within a more comprehensive clinical reasoning.

The main focus of the first weekend is functional hand splinting, while in the second weekend there is a more composite schedule: functional electrical stimulation (Saturday morning); clinical assessment (Saturday afternoon); neurorehabilitation interventions (Sunday morning and afternoon).

Theoretical topics:

  • Principles of upper limb neurorehabilitation
  • Motor learning and neural basis of recovery post stroke
  • What can we learn from research evidence? A critical overview of Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy, Bobath Concept, robotics, functional electrical stimulation, orthotics, virtual reality, motor imagery, mirror therapy, neuromodulation, somatosensory stimulation, aerobic training
  • Towards personalized interventions: clinical assessment and goal setting
  • Rationale and design of functional hand splinting in neurorehabilitation
  • Rationale and applications of functional electrical stimulation

Practice workshops:

  • Wrist-hand splint
  • Wrist-hand splint + thumb opposition
  • Wrist-hand splint+ FES
  • Wrist-hand splint + anty-claw system
  • Wrist-hand splint + pulley system
  • Wrist-hand splint+ soft rest unit for the fingers
  • Three options for thumb splinting
  • Hand anti-claw splint
  • Rest splint
  • manufacturing a triggered FES system
  • practicing clinical assessment scales
  • practicing personalized interventions
  • practicing a session of high intensity interval training for motor learning consolidation

Bonus content (optional, depending on effective time schedule):

  • Kinesiotaping applications in neurorehabilitation
  • Bandage for hand lymphaedema
  • Free time to practice

Structure

The course is organized in eight hours of content a day for four days, distributed in two weekends. Every day there is a morning (9:00-13:30) and afternoon (14:30-18:00) session. There is one 10-minute coffee break for both sessions, and a 60-minute lunch break in between. For more details, see the Event schedule.

What you get with option 1:

  • Presential access to the aula where the course will take place
  • Hard copy of lecture notes
  • Thermoplastic material, velcro and all the material needed to manufacture the orthoses during practical workshops
  • Material to manufacture a triggered FES system (one TENS unit, one foot switch, two lead wires, four electrodes)
  • Unlimited online membership to the "Upper limb Neurorehabilitation Group" with access to exclusive educational content
  • Unlimited access to the whole recorded course, in the form of videos uploaded on YouTube (unlisted mode) and reposted in the "Upper Limb Neurorehabilitation Group"
  • A unique opportunity for networking directly with the docent and other participants passionate about upper limb neurorehabilitation, and to keep exchanging knowledge and opinions through the online group
  • In case that it is not possible to be physically present at the course, reimbursement is available up to one hour before the start of the event. In this case 150 euros will be withheld, and all the contents of option 3 will be offered

Option 2 (Student, presential): 350 euro (early inscription before Sunday 14th August: 300 euro)

What you get with option 2 is exactly the same content as for option 1. The price is reduced to give an additional opportunity for Bachelor/Master/PhD students to boost their education

Option 3 (Professional/Student, virtual): 150 euro

What you get with option 3:

  • Pdf copy of lecture notes
  • Unlimited online membership to the "Upper limb Neurorehabilitation Group" with access to exclusive educational content
  • Unlimited access to the whole recorded course (since one week after the presential session), in the form of videos uploaded on YouTube (unlisted mode) and reposted in the "Upper Limb Neurorehabilitation Group"
  • A unique opportunity for networking and keep exchanging knowledge and opinions through the online group.
  • Note: reimbursement is not applicable

Regulations

  • The presential event (option 1 and 2) is open to professionals and students in the field of occupational therapy, physiotherapy and medicine. The virtual event (option 3) is open to any professional in the biomedical field (healthcare providers, tech developers, entrepeneurs, policy makers etc.)
  • Maximal number of participants (presential): 15
  • It is possible to take any audio, photo and video during the session, and share it on social media or use for personal purposes
  • By subscibing to the course, participants agree on audio/video recording of the whole session
